I had noticed that not as many kids were outside this year as usual; so I wanted to inspire kids to spend their time outdoors. I hosted a Getting Girls Active event for my community. It was a huge hit. I held the event during a Girl Scout leader meeting. I had 23 participants there. The location was free because the meeting was being held at the same time.
In the Getting Girls Active event I had four stations set up. The four stations were Soccer, Football, an Obstacle Course, and a Relay Exercise Race. The soccer station was the biggest hit because the girls enjoyed kicking the ball around. For the soccer station we set up a small area to play. I had them kick the ball around, and then play a short game. At the football station I had come up with various passing and running drills. The football station was the least enjoyed because i did not have a good plan for the station. There was also only one volunteer there, and there were not enough girls in one group to play a game. For the obstacle course I had cones the girls had to weave in and out of, pine needles they had to jump over, a hopscotch course set up, and at the end a parachute for the kids to play with. The relay exercise race was a relay race with a variety of exercises, for example jumping jacks, push-ups, sit-ups, high knees, and a short sprint. Half way through my event I let the girls take a break and have popsicles, which the kids loved. My goal was to inspire kids to enjoy being outside more. I believe the event helped encourage them to try new activities outdoors.
